Is Burner compatible with all smartphones and devices?

Burner is compatible with any modern smartphone or device that has NFC capabilities. Most modern Android and iPhone devices, as well as some tablets, support NFC.

Android devices prior to Chrome 67 and iOS devices prior to iOS 14.5 will not work with BurnerOS (all iPhones with NFC starting the iPhone 6 are upgradable to iOS 14.5).

We recommend using Chrome on Android for the best compatibility. If you’re unsure whether your device has NFC support, please check your device’s manual or contact the manufacturer’s support for confirmation.

Why doesn’t Burner have a seed phrase, and how is my private key secured?

Burner generates a unique, non-extractable key pair during manufacture, eliminating the need for a seed phrase. There is no app or software that can accidentally leak key material or export it for social engineering attacks.

You can add some of your own entropy to the process of key generation. This entropy is used in conjunction with other internal entropy sources to generate a key pair.

Private keys on a Burner are never extractable outside of Burner(s), ensuring that your assets remain secure within the hardware.

Does Burner have a battery or need charging?

No, Burner does not have a battery and does not require charging. It is a passive device and draws power from NFC interactions with your smartphone or desktop NFC reader.

How long will my Burner last?

Your Burner is designed to last for at least 500,000 read/write cycles, or at least 10 years. This is the minimum expected lifespan and independent studies of similar secure chips to those integrated into Burner indicate a significantly longer lifespan.

Does Burner require any software installation?

No, Burner does not require any software installation. It operates through BurnerOS, a browser-based operating system that runs directly on your device without the need for any additional apps or software.

Simply tap your NFC-enabled device to the Burner, and BurnerOS will open in your default browser.

What browsers does Burner support?

BurnerOS requires browsers that support advanced login and security features to function properly. Below is a list of browsers we’ve confirmed to work across both Android and iOS, along with those that are unsupported.

Is my Burner waterproof?

Can my Burner be damaged by X-ray or magnetic fields?

Your Burner can safely pass through X-ray machines, like those used at airport security, without risk of damage.

However, any magnetic field strong enough to damage electronics, like a smartphone, could also affect your Burner, so it’s best to avoid exposure to strong magnets or similar sources. We always recommend backing up your Burner before taking it with you.

Can I update the firmware on my Burner?

By design Burner does not require firmware updates. This reduces the ability for a malicious party to alter a Burner in some way that might reveal private key information.
